Pumpkinfest a Great Success!

I want to give a big thanks to Diane and Bruce Pfeiffer, Linda and John Blevins, Kris and Judy Bancroft, Mary Esther Shannon, Karen Winters, Caren Ruffner, Gina Torres and Thomas Greenlee for making our booth at the 2015 Pumpkinfest a great success.  The children all loved decorating the cans and choosing seeds or a flower to take home and nurture. We gave out 200 plus. I proposed doing this project to help bring exposure to the Rhea County Master Gardeners and we certainly did!  Enjoy a few photos and we need to do this again next year! - Pennie Hendrick

Wooden's Apple Orchard and Cafe Outing

Thomas Greenlee led a group of 10 Master Gardeners to Wooden's Apple Orchard and Cafe on October 24, 2015. The group had the opportunity to spend time in one of the orchards with Mark Wooden as he gave an overview from planting to harvest and everything in between.  While some of their orchards have varieties of large trees that range up to 30 years in age, the newer orchards are planted in dwarf varieties and much easier to manage.

Apple Orchard Tour and Lunch October 24, 2015

Master Gardeners will have a tour of the Wooden's Apple Orchards on Saturday October 24, 2015.  Please meet at the extension office by 9:30 am for carpooling or caravaning to the Orchard. After the tour we will have lunch in their cafe and maybe enjoy some of their wonderful apple dumplings and ice cream! If you plan to buy any apples please make sure you bring cash or check as they do not accept credit cards.

Quick Test for Soil PH

Greenwood Nursery located in McMinnville,Tennessee recently sent out an email with a tip on a quick way to test your soil PH.  Of course, you should always send a sample for a complete test through the extension office, but in a pinch try the following:

Alkaline:  sample of 2 cups of soil and add a couple drops of cider vinegar over the top.  If it fizzles, you have alkaline soil.
